When we started in 2002, we called ourselves
Hungry Lions. 16 boys were involved in the young soccer
fanatics in Imizamo Yethu. We started with one set of shirt
no soccer boots no shorts playing bare foot against the
opponents with full kit.
In the beginning of 2003 Hungry Lions have
been renamed to Hungry Celtic Lions in honour of Glasgow
Celtic whose member has provided us with new shirts - uniforms
in the familiar green and white colours. A tourist from
Glasgow, John Hughes had visited the region
some time ago. A while later, he returned to South Africa
and presented to us with new uniforms as a gift from Glasgow
Celtic. We all know the leopard cannot change its sports,
but fortunately, we are Lions so we had no problem in changing
our name to the Hungry Celtic Lions in appreciation to great
Glasgow Celtic for wonderful gift.
We would like to thank people of Hout Bay
especially Seven Eleven Seperette for numbering
our jerseys and Sport Unlimited, for white
umbro brand short.
The Hungry Celtic Lions have an under 13 team as well as
an under 16 team and its 36 enthusiastic members play matches
every Saturday in the junior league of the Hout Bay Football
Association. They practice every weekday from 4:00 pm to
5:30 pm.
